The Hubble Space Telescope was named after astronomer Edwin Powell Hubble who was born on 29th November, 1889 in Marshfield, Missouri.
His last great contribution to astronomy was a central role in the design and construction of the Hale 200-inch Telescope on Palomar Mountain.
Four times as powerful as the Hooker, the Hale would be the largest telescope on Earth for decades.
Shortly before his death in 1949, Palomar’s 200-inch Hale Telescope was completed; Hubble was the first to use it.
He died of a cerebral thrombosis on September 28, 1953, in San Marino, California.
